96 Points – The Real Review
94+ Points – The Wine Front

Yarra Valley, Victoria

RRP $143 a bottle

There is Yarra Valley Pinot Noir—and then there is Yarra Yering.

The 2023 Yarra Yering Pinot Noir is a serious, beautifully structured expression from one of Australia's most important estates. This isn't Pinot made simply for immediate prettiness. It has perfume and silkiness, but underneath sits genuine concentration, structure and the ability to evolve beautifully in the cellar.

Halliday Wine Companion awarded it an exceptional 97 points, while The Real Review gave it 96 points. The wine was also awarded a Gold Medal at the 2024 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards.

At this level, we're talking about one of the elite Pinot Noirs of the Yarra Valley.

Tasting Notes

Expect a beautifully complex Pinot Noir showing:

  • Dark cherry and raspberry
  • Pomegranate
  • Rose petals
  • Violets
  • Forest floor and sous bois
  • Liquorice and aniseed
  • Savoury spice
  • Subtle smoky oak
  • Fine, persistent tannins

The perfume is gorgeous, but there's real substance underneath.

It's medium-bodied, intense and beautifully structured, with dark cherry and raspberry fruit flowing through a fine but persistent tannin framework. Floral characters and subtle forest-floor complexity provide another dimension, while the finish is long, controlled and remarkably elegant.

Halliday's Philip Rich highlighted its dark cherry, raspberry, rose and sous-bois characters, describing a wine of persistence, structure and intensity that will reward patience.

Critical Acclaim

97 Points – Halliday Wine Companion
96 Points – The Real Review
94+ Points – The Wine Front

The Real Review's assessment noted the wine's youthful colour, floral and undergrowth complexity, concentration, focus and serious structure.

The 2023 has also collected an impressive series of show results:

🥇 Gold Medal – 2024 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards
This is a seriously decorated Pinot Noir.

Meticulous Winemaking

Pinot Noir demands precision, and Yarra Yering takes an extremely careful approach.

The fruit is hand-picked and chilled overnight, then put through a second sorting before destemming into Yarra Yering's small fermenters.

Ferments are gently hand-plunged twice daily, deliberately avoiding excessive extraction and helping preserve the wine's perfume, purity and silky texture.

After pressing, the wine spends approximately 10 months in French oak, with 30% new barrels.

That restrained approach to extraction and oak is important.

The aim isn't to manufacture power.

It's to allow the fruit, vineyard and vintage to speak.

Yarra Yering Pedigree

Yarra Yering occupies a special place in Australian wine.

Founded by Dr Bailey Carrodus, who planted the vineyard in 1969, it played a pivotal role in the revival of the modern Yarra Valley wine industry. Today, under winemaker Sarah Crowe, the estate continues to produce some of Australia's most celebrated wines.

And its reputation has arguably never been stronger.

In 2026, Yarra Yering was named The Real Review's Best Australian Winery, after the publication assessed more than 10,000 wines.

The Pinot Noir sits beautifully within that extraordinary portfolio.

Food Pairings

Perfect with:

  • Roast duck
  • Duck breast with cherry sauce
  • Peking duck
  • Truffle and mushroom risotto
  • Roast quail
  • Pork belly
  • Chargrilled salmon
  • Beef tartare
  • Soft washed-rind cheeses

For something special, try it with duck and wild mushrooms.

Cellaring

This is where the 2023 Yarra Yering Pinot Noir becomes particularly interesting.

Halliday's review makes it clear that the wine is still youthful and structured, with patience expected to be rewarded.

The Wine Front lists a drinking window beginning in 2027 and extending to 2033+.

I'd happily cellar this.

Drink 2027–2038+, or give it a generous decant if opening a bottle young.

Why We Love It

This isn't simply another premium Yarra Valley Pinot Noir.

It's Yarra Yering Pinot Noir in one of its strongest recent releases.

You have 97 points from Halliday, 96 from The Real Review, serious show success and the pedigree of an estate now ranked The Real Review's No. 1 Australian Winery for 2026.

But the real attraction is the style.

It's perfumed but powerful, silky but structured, elegant yet remarkably intense. The dark cherry and raspberry fruit is wrapped in roses, violets, forest-floor complexity and beautifully fine tannins.

This is Pinot Noir that demands a good glass and a little time.

At RRP $143, the 2023 Yarra Yering Pinot Noir sits firmly in Australia's premium Pinot category—and it has the quality and pedigree to justify it.

If you collect Australia's greatest Pinot Noirs from producers such as By Farr, Bass Phillip, Bindi and Giaconda, Yarra Yering deserves to be in that conversation.
