There is nothing quite like Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No. 3.
While much of the Yarra Valley built its reputation on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet and Shiraz, Yarra Yering founder Dr Bailey Carrodus planted a collection of Portuguese varieties that would eventually create one of Australia's most distinctive red wines.
Today, Dry Red Wine No. 3 has evolved into a genuine Australian classic—a fragrant, exotic and beautifully structured blend that combines the intensity of Touriga Nacional with an extraordinary collection of traditional Portuguese varieties.
The 2024 vintage is another outstanding release, with 95 points from Campbell Mattinson at The Wine Front and a Trophy and Gold Medal for Best Other Red Blend at the 2025 Yarra Valley Wine Show.
At RRP $68, this is a serious opportunity to experience one of Yarra Yering's great wines.
Tasting Notes
This is an incredibly aromatic red.
Expect layers of:
- Satsuma plum
- Blackberry and blueberry
- Mixed summer berries
- Lavender and wildflowers
- Liquorice and aniseed
- Bay leaf and dried herbs
- Balsamic complexity
- Savoury spice
- Fine, persistent tannins
The perfume alone tells you this isn't conventional Australian red wine.
There's beautiful berry freshness before darker plum fruit builds through the palate. Liquorice and spice add complexity, while the Portuguese varieties provide floral lift, savoury depth and beautifully energetic acidity.
The result is medium-bodied, fragrant, spicy and incredibly detailed, finishing long, fresh and precise.

Dry Red No. 3 has become one of the benchmark alternative-variety reds in Australia.
Six Portuguese Varieties. One Extraordinary Wine.
This is where the 2024 Dry Red Wine No. 3 becomes fascinating.
The blend is:
46% Touriga Nacional
23% Tinta Cão
15% Tinta Roriz
7% Tinta Amarela
5% Alvarelhão
4% Sousão
Each variety brings something different.
Touriga Nacional forms the backbone, delivering dark fruit, floral perfume, structure and liquorice spice.
Tinta Cão brings fragrant blue fruits and energy.
Tinta Roriz adds savoury depth, while Tinta Amarela contributes floral and bay-leaf characters.
Alvarelhão brings finesse, while Sousão provides acidity and additional drive.
Together they create a wine unlike almost anything else produced in Australia.
The Bailey Carrodus Legacy
Dry Red Wine No. 3 is part of the remarkable legacy of Dr Bailey Carrodus, who established Yarra Yering in 1969 and became one of the pivotal figures in the rebirth of the modern Yarra Valley wine industry.
His decision to plant Portuguese varieties was remarkably adventurous.
These varieties were originally associated with fortified wine production, but Dry Red Wine No. 3 ultimately demonstrated just how exciting they could be as a dry table wine.
Today, under winemaker Sarah Crowe, No. 3 has become one of the most distinctive wines in the entire Yarra Yering portfolio.
A Proven Australian Classic
This isn't simply an interesting alternative-variety blend.
Dry Red Wine No. 3 has become one of Australia's benchmark reds.
Halliday Wine Companion named the 2021 Dry Red Wine No. 3 its top Other Red & Blend, awarding it 97 points and noting the wine's combination of red and black fruits, wildflowers, dried herbs and fine tannin structure.
The 2023 followed with another 97 points from Halliday, while the 2024 continues the remarkable run of form.
This is a wine with a serious track record.
Food Pairings
Brilliant with:
- Chargrilled lamb
- Slow-roasted beef
- Duck breast
- Chorizo
- Portuguese-style pork
- Wood-fired meats
- Mushroom dishes
- Hard cheeses
The wine's combination of fragrant fruit, spice, acidity and savoury tannin makes it an exceptional food wine.
Cellaring
There is enormous appeal in drinking this young.
The floral aromatics, vibrant berries and spice are captivating right now, but the wine's fine tannins and natural acidity also give it excellent cellaring potential.
Drink now–2038+.
I'd drink one now and put several bottles away.
