The 2021 was one of the standout wines in a broad Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir tasting, while Paringa Estate's own awards record shows it also won Gold at the 2022 Mornington Peninsula Wine Show.

Mornington Pinot – But With Some Muscle

Paringa Estate has traditionally made a more powerful style of Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir.

And the Estate wine sits beautifully in that territory.

It's not about making Pinot taste like Shiraz.

It's about giving Pinot:

Fruit depth

Perfume

Savoury complexity

Bittersweet citrus

Mineral tannin

Natural acidity

Spice

There's delicacy in the aromatics.

But underneath?

There's structure.

That's what makes the wine so compelling.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Bright ruby-red with excellent depth while retaining classic Pinot Noir translucency.

Aroma: Immediately perfumed and complex. Red and dark cherries, strawberry and dried rose sit alongside aniseed, mint, forest floor, dried herbs and exotic spice.

Palate: Medium-bodied but packed with personality. Red cherry and strawberry move toward darker cherry, rhubarb and blood orange, with a beautifully savoury, almost amaro-like edge adding complexity.

Texture: Fine but firm. Silky fruit is wrapped around pumice-like tannins and lively natural acidity, creating a Pinot Noir with both succulence and genuine structure.

Finish: Long, savoury and energetic, with cherry, blood orange, herbs, spice and white pepper lingering beautifully.

The longer it sits in the glass, the more interesting it becomes.

A Brilliant 2021 Growing Season

The vintage played directly into the hands of serious Pinot Noir.

Warm and dry conditions through flowering produced good berry set, while moderate temperatures through February and March created a:

Long, even ripening period.

That allowed Paringa to pick the fruit at optimal maturity while retaining:

Lively natural acidity + firm tannin.

And you can see it in the wine.

There's ripeness without jamminess.

Fruit without sweetness.

Power without excessive alcohol.

100% Destemmed + French Oak

The winemaking is equally serious.

The Pinot Noir was:

100% destemmed

before fermentation in:

Two-tonne open fermenters.

It then spent:

11 Months on Lees in French Oak

with:

44% New Oak.

That's a decent amount of new oak.

But there's enough fruit, tannin and acidity here to handle it.

The result is a Pinot with genuine complexity and texture rather than simply oak flavour.

The McCall Family & Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is central to the Paringa Estate story.

Founder Lindsay McCall has a longstanding love of Burgundy and considers Pinot Noir his favourite variety. His son Jamie McCall, who joined the family estate in 2012 and became head winemaker in 2017, shares that obsession.

Lindsay believes great Pinot Noir is fundamentally about fruit quality, describing the equation as roughly:

70% vineyard management

30% winery attention to detail.

That's exactly the philosophy I want behind serious Pinot.

Because you can't manufacture great Pinot Noir in the winery.

The Importance of MV6

Paringa has spent decades refining its Pinot Noir vineyards, and clonal selection is an important part of the story.

Lindsay McCall describes:

MV6 as the “backbone” of Paringa's Pinot Noir

because of its ability to deliver perfumed cherry fruit and supple tannins.

Paringa's oldest MV6 block was planted in 1988, and its performance eventually led to the creation of the estate's top-tier LJM Pinot Noir.

The great thing about the 2021 is that it has already had some bottle age.

You're not buying an embryonic Pinot Noir and waiting years for everything to settle.

It's starting to come into a beautiful drinking window now.

But the combination of:

Fruit concentration

Natural acidity

Firm tannins

Savoury complexity

suggests there's plenty of life ahead.

The estate describes the 2021 as having a luscious dark-fruit core, silky tannins and a long balanced finish.

I'd happily drink it now with some air.

But I'd also happily cellar it for another:

5–8 years.
