There are few vineyard names in Barolo more famous than Bussia.

Located in the commune of Monforte d'Alba, Bussia is one of Barolo's great historic crus, renowned for producing Nebbiolo of extraordinary depth, structure, perfume and longevity.

And now Paolo Scavino has added an exciting new chapter to the Bussia story.

The 2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bussia Vigna Fantini is the debut standalone release from this vineyard and what an extraordinary debut it has been.

98 points JamesSuckling.com. 98 points Kerin O'Keefe. 97 Wine Enthusiast. 96 Vinous. 96 Wine Advocate. 95 Wine Spectator.

Six major critics sitting between 95 and 98 points.

That is an extraordinary level of critical acclaim for the first release of a new single-vineyard Barolo.

Tasting Notes

Expect an intensely perfumed and beautifully structured Barolo with:

  • Wild raspberry and red cherry
  • Morello cherry and dark plum
  • Rose petals, iris and violets
  • Liquorice and sweet spice
  • Mint, menthol and balsamic herbs
  • Tobacco, earth and mineral notes
  • Fine, polished and beautifully layered Nebbiolo tannins

The palate is concentrated and powerful yet remarkably elegant, combining ripe red and dark fruits with vibrant acidity and beautifully polished tannins.

There is genuine Bussia depth here, but the cooler position of Vigna Fantini brings wonderful freshness and perfume.

The tannins are firm yet velvety, giving the wine serious structure without overwhelming the fruit.

This is a Barolo of power, perfume and precision, with exceptional balance and a long, savoury, mineral finish.

About the Wine

Few producers have played a greater role in the modern history of Barolo than Paolo Scavino.

Founded in 1921, the Scavino estate has built an extraordinary portfolio of vineyards across the Barolo region, producing wines that combine the power and structure of Nebbiolo with remarkable purity, perfume and precision.

Vigna Fantini represents an exciting new addition to that portfolio.

Situated within the great Bussia MGA in Monforte d'Alba, the vineyard sits at approximately 370 metres above sea level with a southwest exposure and rocky, loose, sandy soils.

The site is somewhat cooler than other sections of Bussia, helping preserve the freshness and aromatic intensity that makes the 2021 so compelling.

The vineyard has also become something of a “botanical garden” for the Scavino family, with different Nebbiolo clones and rootstocks being studied and cultivated within the site.

Most importantly:

2021 is the first standalone release of Bussia Vigna Fantini.

And judging by the extraordinary critical response, this could become a very important wine within the Scavino portfolio.

Food Pairings

Perfect with:

  • White truffle risotto
  • Beef Wellington
  • Slow-braised beef cheeks
  • Osso buco
  • Roast lamb
  • Roast duck
  • Wild mushroom pasta
  • Aged Parmigiano Reggiano

Cellaring

Enjoy after extended decanting today or cellar confidently for 20–30 years.

Wine Spectator sees potential development through to 2053, giving an indication of just how serious the ageing potential is.

As it matures, expect the youthful cherry, raspberry, rose and violet characters to develop classic mature Nebbiolo complexity of dried roses, truffle, leather, tobacco, forest floor, liquorice and exotic spice.

The combination of concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and fine Nebbiolo tannins should allow this wine to evolve beautifully for decades.

Why We Love It

There is something particularly exciting about buying the first vintage of a new single-vineyard Barolo from a great producer.

And when that vineyard happens to be Bussia, the story becomes even more compelling.

The 2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bussia Vigna Fantini is an extraordinary debut—powerful yet elegant, intensely perfumed yet structured, with beautiful freshness and exceptional tannin quality.

And the critics are almost universally enthusiastic.

98 James Suckling. 98 Kerin O'Keefe. 97 Wine Enthusiast. 96 Vinous. 96 Wine Advocate. 95 Wine Spectator.

Antonio Galloni described it as a tremendous debut and believes Vigna Fantini has the potential to eventually join the finest Barolos in the Scavino range.

That makes this more than simply another highly rated Barolo.

This is the beginning of a new chapter for Paolo Scavino.

At RRP $250, this is outstanding buying for a 98-point single-vineyard Barolo from Bussia, particularly one carrying such an extraordinary run of critical acclaim and serious long-term cellaring potential.
