RRP $200 a bottle

Barolo is full of famous vineyard names.

Cannubi. Brunate. Monprivato. Ravera. Monvigliero. Rocche dell'Annunziata.

But some of the most exciting wines in Barolo today are coming from vineyards that haven't yet achieved the same international recognition.

Bricco Ambrogio is one of them.

Located in Roddi, at the northernmost edge of the Barolo appellation, Bricco Ambrogio produces a beautifully distinctive expression of Nebbiolo—highly perfumed, elegant and polished, yet with the depth and structure to age for decades.

The 2021 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio may be one of the finest wines Scavino has produced from this vineyard, earning an extraordinary collection of scores including 97 points from JamesSuckling.com and 97 points from Kerin O'Keefe.

This is a Barolo vineyard that deserves far more attention.

Tasting Notes

Expect an intensely perfumed Barolo with:

  • Marasca cherry and crushed raspberry
  • Pomegranate and blood orange
  • Rose petals, iris and lavender
  • Liquorice, mint and menthol
  • Sandalwood and balsamic herbs
  • Earth, iron and subtle forest-floor notes
  • Fine, polished and beautifully layered Nebbiolo tannins

The palate combines impressive concentration with remarkable elegance.

Ripe cherry, raspberry and pomegranate are wrapped around beautifully polished tannins, while fresh acidity gives the wine tremendous energy and lift.

There is real depth and power here, but Bricco Ambrogio has a wonderful ability to remain light on its feet.

The finish is long, savoury and mineral, with red fruit returning behind notes of herbs, iron and spice.

This is a beautifully complete Barolo—perfumed, powerful, polished and incredibly precise.

About the Wine

Few producers have helped shape modern Barolo like Paolo Scavino.

The Scavino family has spent generations assembling an extraordinary collection of vineyards across the Barolo region, but Bricco Ambrogio is one of the more fascinating additions to the estate.

The family purchased its first holdings here in 2002, when Bricco Ambrogio was still relatively unknown compared with the famous vineyards of La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba.

Enrico Scavino saw something special.

Today, the family farms approximately seven hectares in Bricco Ambrogio, including around five hectares of Nebbiolo, with only the finest old-vine fruit selected for this single-vineyard Barolo.

Located in the commune of Roddi, Bricco Ambrogio has a cooler personality than many of Barolo's more powerful vineyards.

The site is characterised by:

  • Cooler southeast-facing exposures
  • Significant day-to-night temperature variation
  • Blue marl and sandy soils
  • Excellent aromatic development
  • Naturally fresh acidity
  • Beautifully polished tannins

The result is a distinctive style of Barolo.

Perfumed rather than massive.

Silky rather than aggressive.

Elegant yet still capable of serious ageing.

And the 2021 vintage may be the clearest demonstration yet of what Enrico Scavino saw in this vineyard more than two decades ago.

Food Pairings

Perfect with:

  • White truffle risotto
  • Beef Wellington
  • Slow-braised beef cheeks
  • Osso buco
  • Roast lamb
  • Roast duck
  • Wild mushroom pasta
  • Parmigiano Reggiano

Cellaring

Enjoy after extended decanting today or cellar confidently for 20–25 years.

Wine Spectator recommends drinking from approximately 2027 through 2048, while other critics similarly see substantial long-term potential.

As it matures, expect the beautiful cherry, raspberry, rose and violet characters to develop classic Nebbiolo complexity of dried roses, truffle, leather, tobacco, forest floor, liquorice and exotic spice.

The combination of fresh acidity, concentrated fruit and beautifully structured tannins should allow this wine to develop magnificently.

Why We Love It

This is exactly the sort of Barolo I love discovering.

Bricco Ambrogio doesn't yet carry the fame—or the price tag—of Barolo's superstar vineyards.

But the quality coming from this site is becoming impossible to ignore.

The 2021 Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio is a magnificent example—intensely perfumed, beautifully structured and incredibly polished, with that wonderful combination of depth and lightness that makes great Nebbiolo so compelling.

And the critics agree.

97 James Suckling. 97 Kerin O'Keefe. 96 Wine Spectator. 95 Vinous. 95 The Real Review.

Antonio Galloni at Vinous describes the wine as classy and polished, noting how far Bricco Ambrogio has come since its early vintages and how strongly the 2021 validates Enrico Scavino's belief in this vineyard.

That is the exciting thing about this wine.

You may be watching a great Barolo vineyard establishing its reputation in real time.

At $200, this is outstanding value for a single-vineyard Barolo from one of Piedmont's great producers, particularly with this level of critical acclaim and long-term cellaring potential.

👉 With only around 800 cases produced, Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio remains a relatively small-production Barolo. Secure your bottles while this remarkable vineyard is still flying somewhat under the radar.
