🇩🇪 Wintricher Ohligsberg | Riesling Kabinett | Tiny Production

If you love discovering a producer before everyone else catches on, remember this name:

MAX KILBURG.

This is one of the most exciting young Riesling producers emerging from the Mosel — and the pedigree behind him is seriously impressive.

Max learnt under the maestro Julian Haart.

And that matters.

Julian Haart has become one of the cult names of modern German Riesling, producing tiny quantities from extraordinary old-vine parcels around Piesport and Wintrich.

Kilburg worked with Haart before developing his own wines, and you can see that influence in the philosophy: lightness, precision, energy, minerality and extraordinary drinkability.

But Max isn't simply copying his mentor.

He's rapidly developing a cult following of his own.

The Wintricher Ohligsberg

And this isn't just any vineyard.

Ohligsberg is one of the great steep Riesling sites around Wintrich.

The vineyard rises dramatically above the Mosel, with a steep south-west-facing exposure and soils dominated by blue-grey slate mixed with quartz.

The rocky soils absorb warmth during the day, helping Riesling achieve excellent ripeness, while cool air flowing into the valley at night helps retain acidity and freshness.

It's a magnificent environment for Riesling.

And when you taste great Ohligsberg Kabinett, you understand exactly why the site has such a following.

Fruit + Slate + Acidity + Weightlessness.

That's the magic.

2023 – A Brilliant Kabinett Vintage

The 2023 Mosel vintage produced some absolutely thrilling Kabinetts.

The best wines combine beautifully ripe fruit with clarity, freshness, tension and vibrant acidity.

And Max Kilburg nailed it.

His 2023 Ohligsberg sits at just:

7.5% ALCOHOL

Yet don't mistake low alcohol for a lack of intensity.

That's one of the great paradoxes of top Mosel Kabinett.

The wines can be almost weightless yet incredibly intense.

They float across the palate rather than overpower it.

And then you take another sip.

And another.

And suddenly the bottle has disappeared.

What Does It Taste Like?

Think:

White peach & nectarine

Lemon & lime

Crisp orchard fruit

Fresh herbs & mint

Delicate florals

Wet slate & crushed stone

Electric Mosel acidity

There's beautiful fruit sweetness, but it's countered by that razor-fine acidity and slate-driven minerality.

The result isn't heavy or cloying.

Quite the opposite.

It's incredibly light, pure and energetic.

There's a wonderful interplay between sweetness and acidity, with the rocky mineral character of Ohligsberg running straight through the wine.

This is exactly what great Kabinett is supposed to do.

The Julian Haart Connection

This is a huge part of why Max Kilburg is worth watching.

Before establishing himself under his own label, Kilburg worked with and was mentored by Julian Haart.

Haart himself farms extraordinary old vines in the Wintricher Ohligsberg and has helped turn the vineyard into one of the most talked-about sites among serious Mosel collectors.

That is some education.

Max took that experience back to his family's vineyards around Wintrich and began producing his own tiny range.

And Riesling obsessives started paying attention.

His wines have developed a following precisely because they deliver the qualities people chase in cult Mosel Riesling:

Purity.

Lightness.

Old-school Mosel elegance.

Minerality.

Energy.

And ridiculous drinkability.

Ohligsberg – One of Max's Serious Wines

Among Kilburg's Kabinetts, Ohligsberg has developed a reputation as one of the deepest and most intense.

Where some Kabinetts are all delicacy and dancing acidity, Ohligsberg brings an additional layer of depth, concentration and mineral intensity.

But crucially:

It still weighs almost nothing.

That's what makes wines like this so fascinating.

You get enormous flavour without alcohol.

Sweetness without heaviness.

Acidity without aggression.

Concentration without weight.

It's a balancing act that the Mosel does better than almost anywhere else on earth.
