Exceptional Premier Cru Chablis | Minerality, Purity & Extraordinary Length

“A thrilling expression of Montée de Tonnerre — concentrated white fruit, piercing minerality and saline freshness delivered with extraordinary precision and length.”

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pale lemon-gold with brilliant clarity and youthful green highlights.

Aroma: Pure and beautifully focused, with lemon, green apple, white peach and pear, layered with white flowers, wet stone, oyster shell and subtle marine notes.

Palate: Concentrated yet beautifully controlled. White fruit and citrus sit at the core, carried by crunchy acidity and intense saline minerality. There's impressive depth here, but everything remains chiselled, energetic and unmistakably Chablis.

Finish: Exceptionally long and mineral, with bitter lemon, citrus peel, white fruit and saline notes lingering through a precise, mouth-watering finish.

Jasper Morris MW was particularly impressed, awarding 92–94 points from barrel and highlighting the concentrated white fruit, saline character, crunchy texture and exceptional length. The published retail rating is commonly shown as 94 points. Neal Martin awarded 90–92 points, praising the wine's balance, freshness and bitter-lemon tension.

Critical Acclaim – 2023 Vintage

  • 94 Points – Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
  • 92 Points – Neal Martin, Vinous
  • 94 Points – John Gilman

Gilman found remarkable depth and mineral drive, with lemon, green apple, pear, citrus peel, white flowers and flinty minerality, and gives the wine a drinking window stretching from 2029 to 2055.

That's serious ageing potential for Premier Cru Chablis.

Montée de Tonnerre – The "Eighth Grand Cru"

This is where the wine becomes particularly exciting.

Montée de Tonnerre

is arguably the most prestigious Premier Cru vineyard in Chablis.

Louis Michel itself describes it as the most prestigious and sought-after of the Chablis Premier Crus, noting that some people even refer to it as:

“The eighth Grand Cru.”

And there's a reason.

Montée de Tonnerre sits on the right bank of the Serein, immediately alongside the Grand Cru sector, sharing many of the geological characteristics that make the neighbouring Grand Crus so special.

This isn't ordinary Premier Cru Chablis.

It's a vineyard that consistently performs at the very highest level.

Kimmeridgian Limestone

The terroir is classic Chablis.

Kimmeridgian limestone and marl.

Louis Michel's vines sit on the right bank with a southwest exposure, in soils rich in limestone and the fossilised marine material for which Chablis is famous.

That geology is fundamental to the personality of the wine.

Think:

Lemon • White Fruit • Oyster Shell • Wet Stone • Salinity • Minerality

This is Chardonnay that tastes of place, not winemaking.

No Oak – Pure Chablis

This is one of the great things about Louis Michel.

No oak.

The domaine ferments and matures its wines in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, using indigenous yeasts and spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The Montée de Tonnerre is matured for approximately 12–16 months, with minimal handling before bottling.

That's crucial.

There's no new French oak adding toast, vanilla or richness.

Nothing is hiding the vineyard.

What you're tasting is:

Chardonnay + Kimmeridgian limestone + Montée de Tonnerre.

Pure and simple.

Louis Michel & Fils

Louis Michel is one of the classic names of Chablis.

The Michel family has been growing vines in the region since the 19th century, and today the domaine controls approximately 25 hectares, including holdings in three Grand Crus and seven Premier Crus.

Today Guillaume Michel runs the domaine, continuing its famously restrained approach to winemaking.

The philosophy is straightforward:

Let the terroir speak.

And few vineyards speak more clearly than Montée de Tonnerre.

The 2023 Vintage

2023 delivered generous yields in Chablis, but the best sites retained impressive freshness despite the warm conditions.

Guillaume Michel believes the vintage demonstrates Chablis' ability to retain energy, minerality and individual terroir expression even in a warming climate.

Montée de Tonnerre was particularly successful.

Morris found it had avoided excessive warmth entirely, instead delivering chiselled aromatics, concentrated white fruit, salinity and remarkable intensity.

That's exactly what we want from great Chablis.

Region

Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru, Chablis, Burgundy, France

Chablis sits apart stylistically from most of Burgundy.

It's still:

100% Chardonnay.

But instead of richness and obvious oak, classic Chablis is about:

Citrus • White Fruit • Oyster Shell • Limestone • Acidity • Salinity • Precision

And Montée de Tonnerre takes those characteristics to another level.

It combines Premier Cru intensity with an almost Grand Cru-like sense of depth and longevity.

Food Pairings

  • Fresh oysters
  • Kingfish sashimi
  • Scallops
  • Grilled lobster
  • Moreton Bay bugs
  • Crab
  • Grilled white fish
  • Roast chicken
  • Goat's cheese
  • Comté

My pick?

Fresh oysters or grilled scallops.

That saline, mineral character is made for seafood.

Louis Michel recommends serving Montée de Tonnerre at around 12–14°C and gives the vineyard an ageing potential of 8–15 years.

Why We Love It

This is exactly the sort of white Burgundy I love.

There's no oak trying to impress you.

No excessive richness.

No unnecessary winemaking.

Serious cellaring potential

And the price:

$125.

That's particularly compelling for Montée de Tonnerre. Louis Michel's Australian importer lists the 2023 at $133 RRP, while another Australian retailer currently lists it at $140, making $125 an excellent price.

For anyone who loves Raveneau, Dauvissat, William Fèvre, Christian Moreau or great mineral Chardonnay, this is a wine that deserves attention.
