A seriously impressive Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay combining Meyer lemon, grapefruit, yellow peach, hazelnut and salty sea-breeze characters with creamy texture, beautifully judged oak and mouthwatering citrus acidity.

Jeremy Oliver scored the 2025 95 points, describing a long, smooth and complex Chardonnay with excellent balance and the ability to develop over the next decade.

This might technically be the entry-level Gaffy & Neal Chardonnay.

It certainly doesn't taste like one.

Now we turn everything up.

The Peninsula is tighter, more powerful and more intense, with lime, white nectarine, grilled grapefruit, salty sea air, stone fruit and beautifully integrated spicy oak.

Gaffy & Neal themselves describe the 2025 as the closest they've come to perfection so far, while Jeremy Oliver has scored the 2025 an extraordinary 98 points.

98 points. $80 RRP.

That is serious Chardonnay territory.

And then there's the Shiraz.

The 2023 Altera Terra Fortus combines fruit from Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale and Murrumbateman in the Canberra District, bringing together McLaren Vale richness with the beautiful pepper, spice and perfume of cool-climate Shiraz.

Tim White scored it 96 points, praising its extraordinary intensity, cane berries, mixed pepper, dark chocolate, dense fruit and beautifully structured tannins, calling it simply “Fab shiraz.”

Expect blackberry, plum, dark chocolate, smoked meat, black pepper and exotic spice, with plush fruit wrapped around serious, beautifully integrated tannins.

This is dangerously good Shiraz for $50.

The Doug Neal Connection

There's a fascinating thread running through all three wines:

Doug Neal.

Gaffy & Neal is the collaboration between Doug Neal and Darrin Gaffy of Principia, created specifically to make Chardonnay from the Mornington Peninsula. Halliday notes that production is tiny, with the project making just two Chardonnays and no more than around 300 dozen in total.

Doug's connection with great Chardonnay runs particularly deep through his long association with Giaconda and the Kinzbrunner family.

He also imports the highly regarded French oak barrels used by some of Australia's greatest Chardonnay makers. Tim White notes the Gaffy & Neal wines are matured in premium French oak including Sirugue Cuvée Nuits Vosges and Tronçais tight-grain barriques.

You can taste that experience in these wines.

There's power, but also precision.
