Exceptional Value Piedmont Nebbiolo | Perfume, Freshness & Energy

“A beautiful introduction to serious Piedmont Nebbiolo — fragrant, energetic and wonderfully pure, with red fruits, florals and fine tannins.”

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Luminous light garnet with the beautifully transparent colour typical of Nebbiolo.

Aroma: Wonderfully fragrant with raspberry and cherry, layered with dried rose petals, crushed violet, subtle spice, graphite and citrus peel.

Palate: Medium-bodied, fresh and energetic. Red fruits dominate, with raspberry and cherry joined by blood orange, white pepper and subtle spice. The tannins are fine and dusty, providing unmistakable Nebbiolo structure without making the wine difficult or austere.

Finish: Bright, fresh and persistent, with red fruit, citrus, spice and a subtle savoury, herbal character lingering beautifully.

Gary Walsh awarded the wine 93 points, praising its freshness, energy and ability to deliver plenty of genuine Nebbiolo character.

\The Purest Expression of Nebbiolo

G.D. Vajra describes this wine beautifully:

“Our quest for the innocence of Nebbiolo, its purest expression.”

And that's exactly the point of this wine.

This isn't trying to imitate a heavily structured young Barolo.

Instead, Vajra wants to capture the fundamental character of Nebbiolo:

Rose • Raspberry • Cherry • Citrus • Spice • Fine Tannin • Freshness

The fruit comes from younger vineyards across both Tortonian and Serravallian valleys, planted on calcareous soils between approximately 280 and 550 metres above sea level.

That's some serious terroir for a $52 bottle.

Vineyard & Winemaking

The 2024 is:

100% Nebbiolo

The fruit is hand-picked during the cooler early hours of the day to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity.

The 2024 harvest ran from 28 September through 24 October, with moderate temperatures allowing the fruit to achieve excellent aromatic maturity while retaining moderate alcohol levels.

Fermentation lasted up to:

18 days

followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation.

Then comes one of the most important details:

Approximately 7 months in stainless steel.

No heavy oak influence.

The focus is completely on the purity, perfume and energy of Nebbiolo.

G.D. Vajra – Serious Barolo Pedigree

This isn't simply an inexpensive Langhe Nebbiolo from an unknown producer.

It's made by G.D. Vajra — one of the benchmark family estates of Barolo.

The Vajra family's philosophy has long centred around sensitive farming, biodiversity and preserving freshness in the wines. Aldo Vajra was among the early adopters of organic farming practices in Piedmont, beginning this approach in 1971.

Today the wines combine:

Tradition • Purity • Perfume • Freshness • Precision

And the Langhe Nebbiolo is one of the easiest ways to experience that house style without paying Barolo prices.

2024 – Freshness & Drinkability

2024 was a demanding growing season in Piedmont, requiring significant work in the vineyards.

For the Langhe Nebbiolo, however, the extended and relatively late harvest produced fruit with compelling aromatic maturity while retaining moderate alcohol.

The finished wine sits at just:

13.5% Alcohol

which helps explain the beautiful freshness and drinkability Gary Walsh found in the wine.

This isn't heavy Italian red.

It's fragrant, energetic and wonderfully alive.

Food Pairings

  • Pappardelle with wild mushrooms
  • Tajarin with ragù
  • Porcini risotto
  • Roast duck
  • Veal
  • Osso Buco
  • Pizza with prosciutto and mushrooms
  • Charcuterie
  • Parmigiano-Reggiano

This is one of those reds that's incredibly easy to put on the dinner table.

Vineyards up to 550 metres elevation

Calcareous Piedmont soils

Hand-picked fruit

Classic Nebbiolo perfume

And the RRP?

$52.

That's outstanding.

Gary Walsh's tasting note gets straight to the heart of the wine: cherry and raspberry, floral perfume and spice, blood orange, fine dusty tannin and a bright, energetic finish.

This is exactly what entry-level Nebbiolo should be.

It gives you the aroma, tannin, freshness and personality that makes the grape so compelling, but without demanding ten years in the cellar before you can enjoy it.

And importantly, it comes from a producer whose greatest wines are serious Barolo.

Perfumed. Fresh. Energetic. Delicious.

The 2024 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo is a superb introduction to Piedmont and one of those bottles that dramatically over-delivers for the money.

93 Points. G.D. Vajra. Piedmont Nebbiolo. $52 RRP.
