95 POINTS – WINE ENTHUSIAST!
93 POINTS – WINE SPECTATOR!
This is Chardonnay with real personality.
And a fascinating story behind every bottle.
Flowers – The Pioneers of the Far Sonoma Coast
The Flowers story begins in 1989.
And the people behind it were Walt and Joan Flowers.
Two horticulturalists who had a remarkable vision.
At a time when many California winemakers were concentrating on warmer, more established regions, Walt and Joan were looking towards the wild coastal mountains of Sonoma.
They believed that Chardonnay and Pinot Noir could thrive in these extreme maritime conditions.
But there was a problem.
Very few people had attempted to establish premium vineyards in this rugged environment.
The terrain was difficult.
The weather unpredictable.
The winds relentless.
And the proximity to the Pacific Ocean created a very different growing environment from much of California's established wine country.
Yet Walt and Joan recognised something extraordinary.
The combination of cool temperatures, coastal influence and long growing seasons had the potential to produce wines with remarkable elegance and precision.
And they were absolutely right.
Flowers would become one of the great pioneers of the far Sonoma Coast.
Camp Meeting Ridge – A Vineyard Almost Nobody Believed Would Work
Here's something particularly fascinating.
In 1991, Walt and Joan planted their first estate vineyard at Camp Meeting Ridge.
And the location was extraordinary.
Just two miles from the Pacific Ocean!
That's approximately 3.2 kilometres.
The vineyard sits around 1,500 feet above sea level.
And here's the remarkable part.
The vines grow above the coastal fog line.
That means the vineyards can receive beautiful sunshine while the surrounding coastal air remains remarkably cool.
It's an extraordinary combination.
Sunlight to develop flavour.
Cold Pacific winds to moderate temperatures.
And a long growing season that allows Chardonnay to ripen slowly.
The vineyard is surrounded by forests and rugged coastal wilderness.
This is not easy vineyard country.
But it's precisely these challenging conditions that can produce wines with remarkable individuality.
Today, Camp Meeting Ridge is regarded as one of the most important vineyards on the far Sonoma Coast.
And its success helped demonstrate the extraordinary potential of this previously overlooked region.
Here's Something Most People Don't Know – Flowers Helped Create the Reputation of the Far Sonoma Coast
Today, the Sonoma Coast is one of California's most fashionable regions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
But that wasn't always the case.
When Flowers began planting vineyards in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the far western Sonoma Coast was still largely unexplored for premium winegrowing.
Its steep slopes, dense forests and cold maritime climate made it an unlikely destination for conventional vineyard development.
But Flowers helped change that perception.
The winery demonstrated that this rugged coastal landscape could produce Chardonnay with exceptional purity, freshness and structure.
And over time, other outstanding producers began exploring the region.
Today, the far Sonoma Coast is home to some of California's most compelling cool-climate wines.
Flowers wasn't simply part of that movement.
It helped lead it.
Chantal Forthun – The Winemaker Behind Flowers
Today, Flowers is guided by talented winemaker Chantal Forthun.
And her philosophy is beautifully aligned with the estate's original vision.
The vineyard comes first.
The objective is to preserve the purity of the fruit and express the character of the Sonoma Coast.
Rather than relying on excessive oak or richness, the wines emphasise balance, texture and natural acidity.
Chantal has also explored larger-format oak vessels as part of her approach to Chardonnay.
The aim is to allow the wine to develop complexity without overwhelming its delicate coastal character.
And that's what makes Flowers so exciting.
These are wines that combine California fruit concentration with a level of freshness and precision that can be absolutely extraordinary.
The 2024 Vintage – A Beautiful Expression of the Sonoma Coast
The 2024 growing season brought a wet winter followed by a warmer, drier summer.
The resulting Chardonnay combines lovely fruit concentration with the freshness and mineral character for which Flowers is famous.
And here's what makes this wine particularly compelling.
The Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is not the same bottling as the estate's more expensive Camp Meeting Ridge Chardonnay.
Instead, it is a broader expression of the Sonoma Coast, drawing on carefully selected coastal vineyard sources.
That allows Flowers to capture the character of this remarkable maritime region.
Fresh citrus.
Beautiful orchard fruit.
Fine texture.
And a distinctive saline finish.
It's a wonderful introduction to the Flowers style.
Tasting Notes – Meyer Lemon, Mandarin and Coastal Minerality
The 2024 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is a beautifully refined wine.
And the tasting profile is absolutely gorgeous.
The aromatics reveal:
-
Fresh Meyer lemon
-
Mandarin and citrus peel
-
White peach
-
Pear
-
Delicate coastal herbs
-
Subtle floral perfume
-
Fine savoury spice
-
Gentle mineral complexity
The palate is wonderfully energetic.
There's beautiful citrus concentration, with Meyer lemon and mandarin providing freshness and lift.
White peach and pear contribute a lovely sense of fruit richness.
But the wine never feels heavy.
Instead, it has a wonderfully elegant texture.
Silky.
Precise.
Beautifully balanced.
A subtle preserved-lemon character adds complexity.
And then comes the distinctive Flowers signature.
Saline coastal minerality.
A refreshing, briny quality that gives the finish wonderful energy and length.
The acidity is bright and mouth-watering.
And the finish is clean, lively and beautifully persistent.
Meyer lemon. Mandarin. White peach. Coastal herbs. Preserved lemon. Fine spice. Saline minerality. Extraordinary freshness.
This is California Chardonnay at its most elegant.
95 Points – Wine Enthusiast
The 2024 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay has attracted an outstanding:
95 POINTS – WINE ENTHUSIAST!
A remarkable endorsement for the wine's freshness, citrus complexity and fine structure.
The review highlights vibrant lemon and lime characters, green herbs and citrus blossom.
The palate combines lively acidity with fine texture and savoury complexity.
It's exactly the style that makes modern Sonoma Coast Chardonnay so exciting.
93 Points – Wine Spectator
And the wine has also received:
93 POINTS – WINE SPECTATOR!
Wine Spectator highlights the Chardonnay's citrus intensity, aromatic herbs, ginger spice and saline complexity.
The finish is long and beautifully detailed.
And the acidity provides wonderful precision.
A second outstanding endorsement for this remarkable coastal Chardonnay.
Why Flowers Is So Different from Traditional California Chardonnay
For many years, California Chardonnay was associated with a very particular style.
Ripe tropical fruit.
Generous oak.
Buttery richness.
And considerable weight.
Some of those wines can be magnificent.
But Flowers represents another side of California Chardonnay.
A cooler, more maritime expression.
The fruit is beautifully concentrated.
But the acidity remains vibrant.
The texture is elegant.
The oak is restrained.
And the finish has a wonderful mineral freshness.
It's a style that will appeal enormously to lovers of great Australian cool-climate Chardonnay.
Particularly those who enjoy the elegance of Tasmania, Beechworth and the Yarra Valley.
For Lovers of Great White Burgundy
If you love Chardonnay with beautiful citrus purity, fine texture and mineral precision, Flowers deserves your attention.
Think about the qualities that make great white Burgundy so compelling.
Fresh citrus.
Delicate stone fruit.
Fine acidity.
Subtle savoury complexity.
And extraordinary length.
Flowers delivers many of those same qualities.
But with its own unmistakable Sonoma Coast personality.
It's not trying to imitate Burgundy.
It's expressing one of California's most remarkable maritime landscapes.
And that's what makes it so exciting.
Cellaring Potential
The 2024 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is beautifully approachable now.
Its vibrant acidity and fine structure also suggest good potential for further development.
Suggested drinking window: 2026–2032, with potential beyond under excellent storage conditions.
I'd happily open a bottle now to appreciate its youthful citrus freshness.
But I'd also put a few away.
With time, the fresh citrus and orchard fruit characters should develop deeper savoury and nutty complexity.
And that wonderful coastal acidity should continue to provide freshness.
Food Pairings
This is a magnificent Chardonnay for food.
I'd recommend:
-
Freshly shucked oysters
-
King George whiting
-
Grilled scallops
-
Southern rock lobster
-
Roast chicken with lemon and thyme
-
Grilled snapper
-
Seafood pasta
-
Comté or Gruyère
Personally, I'd love this with freshly grilled scallops, brown butter and a squeeze of lemon.
The combination of citrus freshness, fine texture and saline minerality would be absolutely sensational.
