Bordeaux Pedigree Meets the Yarra Valley

This is a seriously impressive Cabernet.

The 2021 Dominique Portet Réserve de Famille brings together generations of Bordeaux winemaking heritage with one of Australia's greatest regions for cool-climate Cabernet.

Dominique Portet comes from a remarkable French winemaking lineage, and today his son Ben Portet, a tenth-generation winemaker, heads the family's Yarra Valley operation. The estate was established in Coldstream in 2000 and has become particularly respected for elegant, restrained wines that reflect both its French heritage and Yarra Valley terroir.

The Réserve de Famille sits at the top end of that story. The 2021 was a new flagship cuvée and immediately announced itself with 97 points from Halliday Wine Companion and 96 points from The Wine Front.

Tasting Notes

Expect a beautifully sophisticated Cabernet blend showing:

  • Cassis and blackcurrant
  • Blackberry and mulberry
  • Red cherry
  • Violets
  • Graphite and pencil shavings
  • Cedar and fine French oak
  • Sweet tobacco and subtle spice
  • Fine, persistent tannins

This isn't a huge, heavy Australian Cabernet.

It is medium-bodied, refined and beautifully structured, with concentrated fruit wrapped around incredibly fine tannins. The graphite and floral characters give it a distinctly Bordeaux-like personality, while the purity of fruit and freshness unmistakably speak of the Yarra Valley.

A Flagship Cabernet Blend

One important point for the Shopify listing: despite sometimes being referred to simply as Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Réserve de Famille is actually a Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux blend.

The composition is:

65% Cabernet Sauvignon
19% Merlot
11% Malbec
5% Petit Verdot

The fruit comes entirely from the Portet family's Coldstream estate vineyards, with the soils particularly suited to Cabernet and other Bordeaux varieties. Each parcel was hand-picked and carefully sorted before being fermented separately in large oak vats. The finished blend matured for 14 months in French oak, 35% new.

This approach is all about restraint. The oak supports rather than dominates, allowing perfume, fruit purity and fine tannin structure to remain at the centre of the wine.

The Outstanding 2021 Vintage

The 2021 Yarra Valley vintage was particularly well suited to Cabernet.

The growing season was cool and even, without significant heat spikes, while well-timed rainfall and a long ripening period allowed Cabernet to develop flavour slowly while maintaining freshness. Dominique Portet describes it as an idyllic season for producing refined, ageworthy Cabernet blends.

That's exactly what you find here—concentration without heaviness and structure without hardness.

Food Pairings

Perfect with:

  • Beef Wellington
  • Roast lamb
  • Dry-aged rib-eye
  • Beef short ribs
  • Venison
  • Duck breast
  • Wild mushroom dishes
  • Mature hard cheeses

Cellaring

This is absolutely a wine for the cellar.

The combination of concentrated Cabernet fruit, vibrant acidity and exceptionally fine tannins should allow the 2021 Réserve de Famille to develop beautifully over the next 15–20 years.

Drink now with a good decant or cellar through 2037+. The Wine Front lists a drinking window extending to 2037+.

Why We Love It

This is exactly the kind of Australian Cabernet that deserves far more attention.

You have a family with ten generations of winemaking history, deep Bordeaux roots, an estate vineyard in one of Australia's great Cabernet regions and an exceptional cool 2021 vintage. Then you have the reviews: 97 Halliday, 96 Wine Front and 96 The Real Review.

Most importantly, the wine delivers.

It's not trying to overwhelm you with fruit or oak. It's perfumed, medium-bodied, beautifully structured and incredibly sophisticated, with cassis, violets, graphite and fine tannins giving it that wonderful Bordeaux-like feel while retaining the freshness and purity of the Yarra Valley.
