Exceptional Premier Cru Burgundy | Power, Minerality & Finesse

“A magnificent expression of Pommard — powerful and concentrated, yet remarkably fine, with ripe fruit, beautifully structured tannins and a thrilling mineral finish.”

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep ruby-red with excellent intensity and youthful brilliance.

Aroma: Rich and expressive with red cherry, black raspberry and darker berry fruit, layered with liquorice, summer flowers, bark, subtle oak and spice.

Palate: Powerful, concentrated and beautifully structured. Ripe red and dark fruits drive the medium-to-full-bodied palate, with liquorice and savoury spice adding complexity. The tannins are substantial but impressively fine, giving the wine classic Pommard structure without heaviness.

Finish: Long, energetic and mineral, with beautifully ripe fruit meeting a distinctive salty minerality that carries through the persistent finish.

Critical Acclaim – 2022 Vintage

  • 95 Points – JamesSuckling.com

James Suckling's Stuart Pigott praised the 2022 for its combination of power, structure and concentration, but importantly noted just how fine the tannins are for Pommard. He recommends drinking from 2026 onwards.

Les Rugiens – One of Pommard's Greatest Premier Crus

This is where things get serious.

Pommard doesn't have a single Grand Cru.

But there are a handful of Premier Cru vineyards that have long been considered the village's greatest terroirs.

And right at the top sits:

Les Rugiens.

Alongside Grands Epenots and Clos des Epenots, Les Rugiens is widely regarded among Pommard's finest climats.

Faiveley's parcel is particularly exciting.

The domaine purchased its approximately half-hectare holding in 2007, with the vines now around 70 years old.

So you're getting:

Old Vines.

Tiny Vineyard Holding.

Premier Cru Terroir.

One of Pommard's Great Sites.

That's a formidable combination.

Vineyard & Winemaking

The 2022 is 100% Pinot Noir from organically grown grapes.

The wine was matured for approximately:

14 months in French oak – around one-third new.

That level of new oak is beautifully judged for a wine with this much fruit concentration and structure. It provides support and complexity without overwhelming the character of Les Rugiens.

The result is quintessential serious Pommard:

Black Fruit • Red Fruit • Liquorice • Spice • Fine Tannins • Salty Minerality • Length

Domaine Faiveley

Few Burgundy names carry the history and vineyard holdings of Domaine Faiveley.

Founded in 1825, the domaine has spent generations assembling an extraordinary collection of vineyards across Burgundy, with holdings throughout the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise.

The domaine's philosophy is focused firmly on allowing individual Burgundian climats to express their identity, using careful harvesting, gentle handling, French oak maturation and patient élevage.

And with a vineyard as distinguished as Les Rugiens, that's exactly what you want.

Region

Pommard 1er Cru, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France

Pommard is one of Burgundy's most famous red wine villages.

Compared with the famously perfumed wines of neighbouring Volnay, Pommard traditionally produces Pinot Noir with greater:

Depth • Structure • Dark Fruit • Earth • Tannin • Power

But the best Pommards aren't simply muscular.

They combine that power with finesse.

And that's exactly what makes the 2022 Faiveley Les Rugiens so compelling.

James Suckling specifically highlights the wine's combination of significant concentration and remarkably fine tannins.

2022 – An Outstanding Burgundy Vintage

The 2022 growing season was warm and dry, but Faiveley's technical team reported excellent potential alcohol levels of roughly 12.8–13.5%, describing them as textbook figures for modern Burgundy.

The result in Les Rugiens is a wine with substantial ripeness and concentration but without sacrificing freshness.

That's the key.

Power without heaviness.

Food Pairings

  • Duck confit
  • Slow-roasted lamb shoulder
  • Beef Bourguignon
  • Venison
  • Beef Wellington
  • Braised beef cheek
  • Wild mushroom and truffle dishes
  • Mature Comté or Gruyère

Faiveley's suggested pairings include game stew, lamb shoulder, duck confit and mature cheeses.

Why We Love It

This is serious Burgundy.

Not simply because it says:

Premier Cru.

It's the vineyard.

Les Rugiens.

One of Pommard's most revered climats.

Then look at what you're getting:

Approximately 70-year-old vines

Tiny 0.5-hectare Faiveley parcel

Pommard Premier Cru

100% Pinot Noir

Organically grown fruit

14 months French oak

Serious ageing potential

And:

RRP $290.

That's unquestionably serious money.

But this isn't everyday Burgundy.

This is one of Pommard's benchmark Premier Cru terroirs, from one of Burgundy's great historic domaines, in an outstanding vintage.

And the 95-point James Suckling review gets to the heart of the wine: power and concentration combined with unusually fine tannins and a long, salty mineral finish.

Powerful. Mineral. Structured. Refined.

The 2022 Domaine Faiveley Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is a superb example of why the greatest Pommard Premier Crus can sit comfortably among the serious red wines of Burgundy.
