Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep, brilliant ruby-crimson with remarkable intensity and youthful purple highlights.

Aroma: Profound and complex, opening with red cherry, blackberry and dark berries, then revealing spiced plum, orange zest, peony, wet earth and exotic spice. There's a darker, ferrous and almost sanguine character underneath the fruit that is quintessentially serious Mazis.

Palate: Concentrated and powerful, yet astonishingly graceful. Layers of cherry, blackberry and dark plum flow across the palate with bright acidity, beautifully integrated oak and extraordinarily fine tannins. Despite the intensity, the wine retains remarkable precision and energy.

Finish: Monumentally long. Fruit, spice, earth, iron and saline minerality continue to unfold through an exceptionally persistent finish.

This is an extraordinary critical lineup.

The Wine Advocate found the wine broad, enveloping and concentrated, with dark berries, spiced plum, orange zest and peony before a pure saline finish. Vinous likewise awarded 94–96 points, with a suggested drinking window of 2028–2052.

Faiveley has substantial holdings here, spread across parcels in Mazis-Haut and Mazis-Bas. Decanter reports approximately 1.56 hectares, with the majority in Mazis-Haut.

alongside a younger parcel replanted in 2020. The soils are shallow and formed from material washed down from the nearby combe.

I'd be very comfortable cellaring this for:

15–25+ years.

If opening young, give it serious air and use a large Burgundy glass.

But if you only have one bottle?

Put it away.
