Tasting Notes

Appearance: Bright mid-ruby with excellent clarity and youthful crimson highlights.

Aroma: Lifted and beautifully detailed with red cherry, raspberry, strawberry and brambly red fruits, layered with dried rose, forest floor, white pepper, earth and subtle spice.

Palate: Medium-bodied, energetic and wonderfully precise. Succulent cherry and raspberry fruit flows across the palate, supported by finely grained tannins and a distinct mineral backbone. There's classic Nuits-Saint-Georges structure here, but the overall impression is one of finesse rather than brute force.

Finish: Long, balanced and elegant, with red fruit, earth, spice and mineral notes lingering through a beautifully refined finish. Jasper Morris MW particularly praised its lifted cherry and raspberry fruit, balance and fine length.

Burghound highlights the wine's energy, mineral drive and serious structure, while Neal Martin found brambly red fruit, dried roses, strawberry, forest floor, white pepper and finely balanced tannins.

Clos des Argillières – Vines Planted in 1942

This is where the wine becomes seriously exciting.

Dureuil-Janthial owns only around:

0.4 hectares

of Clos des Argillières, situated at Prémeaux-Prissey in the southern sector of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

The vines were planted in:

1942.

That makes them around 80 years old at the time of the 2022 harvest.

And there's another fascinating detail.

The vineyard sits immediately beside the famous Clos de l'Arlot, giving this tiny parcel some very serious neighbours.

The Terroir

The vineyard faces east and sits over clay-limestone soils with substantial surface gravel. Australian importer Bibendum gives an even more precise description: pink Prémeaux marble beneath approximately 60cm of clay-rich soil.

That clay helps explain the name:

Clos des Argillières.

And it contributes to a wine with genuine depth and structure while retaining the mineral freshness and finesse that distinguishes this particular site.

Vineyard & Winemaking

The fruit is:

Hand harvested

and

Double sorted

before entering the winery.

The grapes undergo approximately one week of cold maceration before fermentation in conical wooden vats. Extraction is determined through daily tasting rather than following a fixed recipe.

The wine is then matured for:

12 months in barrel – 50% new

followed by:

6 months in stainless steel

before bottling according to the lunar calendar.

For the 2022 vintage specifically, Vincent Dureuil used no whole clusters and employed relatively gentle extraction because the skins were naturally thick and extraction came easily.

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial

Vincent Dureuil has become one of the most highly regarded growers working in Burgundy's Côte Chalonnaise.

Based in Rully, his reputation has grown enormously as Burgundy collectors have discovered just how serious these wines can be.

But this wine takes us north.

Into the:

Côte de Nuits.

And specifically into one of Burgundy's great red-wine appellations:

Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Production is minuscule. Australian importer International Fine Wines reported receiving less than three cases of the 2022 Clos des Argillières.

That's tiny.
