Exceptional Premier Cru Burgundy | Perfume, Purity & Finesse
“A beautifully expressive Volnay — ripe redcurrant and crushed strawberry, fine tannins and wonderful mineral definition.”
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Brilliant ruby-red with beautiful clarity and youthful crimson highlights.
Aroma: Immediately expressive with ripe redcurrant, raspberry, crushed strawberry and wild strawberry, layered with violet, subtle peppermint, bitter chocolate, cardamom and delicate earthy complexity.
Palate: Medium-bodied, finely structured and beautifully harmonious. Pure red berry fruit sits at the centre, carried by fine tannins and excellent mineral freshness. There's concentration without heaviness and a wonderful combination of generosity and classical Volnay finesse.
Finish: Long, fresh and beautifully detailed, with raspberry, strawberry, subtle spice and mineral notes lingering over fine tannins. The 2023 received 90–92 points from The Wine Advocate, which praised its open red-fruited bouquet, harmonious palate and fine minerality.
Critical Acclaim – 2023 Vintage
- 92 Points – The Wine Advocate
Another excellent result for a vineyard with a remarkably consistent critical record: the 2022 also received 92 Wine Advocate, while the 2020 earned 93.
Les Brouillards – Classic Premier Cru Volnay
Les Brouillards is a Volnay Premier Cru lying towards the Pommard side of the appellation.
That location helps explain the personality of the wine.
You still get the perfume and elegance associated with Volnay, but there's also genuine:
Depth • Structure • Savouriness • Tannin
It's a beautiful middle ground.
Volnay finesse with an extra layer of structure.
Previous vintages have been noted for ripe red fruits, florals, mineral character and enough tannin to reward cellaring, while retaining the delicacy that makes Volnay so compelling.
Vineyard & Winemaking
This is where the value proposition becomes particularly interesting.
The wine comes from approximately:
50-year-old Pinot Noir vines
with extraordinarily low yields reported at around:
15 hl/ha.
The fruit is:
Hand harvested
before fermentation for approximately two weeks in stainless steel, using:
Indigenous yeasts.
The wine then spends approximately:
16 months in French oak
with only:
20% new oak.
It is matured on lees, undergoes malolactic fermentation and is bottled without filtration.
That's beautifully traditional Burgundy winemaking.
And importantly, only 20% new oak means the emphasis remains where it should:
On the vineyard and the Pinot Noir.
Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay
Thierry Glantenay is one of those Burgundy growers worth knowing.
The domaine is based in Volnay, with Thierry producing wines from an impressive collection of terroirs across Volnay and Pommard.
His approach is relatively restrained in the cellar. Rather than forcing extraction, the domaine has historically allowed fermentation itself to extract colour, flavour and tannin, with restrained pigeage and remontage and patient élevage in barrel.
The result is Burgundy built around:
Fruit • Terroir • Texture • Freshness
rather than excessive winemaking.
Region
Volnay 1er Cru, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
Volnay is one of Burgundy's great Pinot Noir villages.
Where neighbouring Pommard tends toward greater power and structure, Volnay is famous for:
Perfume • Red Fruit • Florals • Fine Tannins • Elegance
Les Brouillards brings a slightly more structured edge to that personality.
The result is Pinot Noir with enough substance to age but enough perfume and generosity to be extremely seductive.
