93 Points – Halliday Wine Companion

Cambridge, Tasmania

RRP $42

The 2024 Clarence House Estate Pinot Noir is another superb-value Tasmanian Pinot Noir, coming from the historic Clarence House property at Cambridge, just north of Hobart.

The vineyard was first planted by owner David Kilpatrick in 1998 on northeast-facing slopes in the foothills of the Meehan Ranges. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dominate the vineyard, planted over distinctive Jurassic dolerite and basalt soils.

And there's some serious winemaking talent behind it:

Anna Pooley & Justin Bubb

Halliday Wine Companion lists the acclaimed duo as the winemakers behind Clarence House.

At just $42 RRP, this is a lot of Tasmanian Pinot Noir for the money.

Tasting Notes

Expect a wonderfully detailed combination of:

Wild Strawberry • Raspberry • Red Cherry • Plum • Boysenberry • Dried Flowers • Five Spice • Earth • Forest Floor

There's plenty of fruit, but this isn't a simple fruit-driven Pinot.

It's the savoury detail underneath—the spice, undergrowth, dried flowers and earth—that makes it interesting.

The palate combines concentration with supple tannins and crunchy acidity, finishing fresh, long and beautifully composed.

The Clarence House Vineyard

Clarence House itself dates back to 1830, when the property formed part of the market-garden land supplying Hobart.

David Kilpatrick began planting vines in 1998, establishing Pinot Noir on the property's northeast-facing slopes. Today the estate sits on distinctive dolerite and basalt soils in a low-rainfall location between Hobart and the Coal River Valley.

It's a small Tasmanian vineyard with a very serious focus on Pinot Noir.

Winemaking

The 2024 draws Pinot Noir from multiple blocks and clones across the estate.

The fruit undergoes wild fermentation, with a small proportion of whole bunches incorporated to bring additional perfume and structure.

Maturation takes place in a combination of new and older French oak barriques and puncheons.

The result is classic modern Tasmanian Pinot:

Perfumed. Fresh. Fine-boned. Savoury.

Anna Pooley & Justin Bubb

This is another major reason to pay attention.

Clarence House Pinot Noir is made by Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb, two names that will already be very familiar to anyone following Tasmania's best cool-climate wines.

And at $42, you're getting access to that winemaking pedigree at a fraction of the price of many premium Tasmanian Pinot Noirs.
