Rathmine Vineyard – Echunga

This isn't a broad regional blend.

The fruit comes from a single vineyard at Echunga in the Adelaide Hills — the Rathmine Vineyard, a site Bondar has worked with for more than a decade.

The vineyard sits at around:

450 metres above sea level

and is planted to Bernard 76 Chardonnay, with vines now approaching 30 years of age.

Beneath the vines are shallow clay-loam soils running into limey rock and a limestone base — an excellent foundation for Chardonnay with freshness and mineral drive.

This is a genuinely serious site.

And the 2024 has absolutely nailed it.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pale straw with bright green-gold highlights.

Aroma: Beautifully composed yet intense. White nectarine, lemon curd and citrus lead into toasted hazelnut, oatmeal and ground ginger, with a subtle oyster-shell character adding complexity.

Palate: This is where the wine really comes alive. There's serious fruit intensity, but nothing feels heavy. Nectarine and citrus sit within a beautifully textured palate, with electric acidity, wet-stone minerality and fine stone-fruit-kernel nuttiness providing tension and shape.

Finish: Exceptionally long, precise and mineral. The combination of citrus, stone fruit, subtle nuttiness and coiled acidity continues beautifully through the finish.

It tastes considerably more expensive than $45.

Marcus Ellis found white nectarine, lemon curd, toasted hazelnut, oatmeal and ginger, along with oyster-shell minerality. He particularly praised the harmony and quiet power of the wine, with electric acidity beautifully integrated into the fruit and texture.

Serious Winemaking

The Rathmine Vineyard fruit is:

Hand-picked

then lightly pressed directly to barrel without sulphur addition.

Fermentation occurs naturally using indigenous yeasts in French oak, with approximately:

25% new oak

and the wine spends around:

10 months in barrel.

For the low-yielding 2024 vintage, Halliday notes a combination of one Stockinger demi-muid and seasoned oak, with native barrel fermentation and full malolactic fermentation.

The result isn't overtly oaky or buttery.

It's about:

Oak without domination.

Acidity without austerity.
