Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep ruby-crimson with excellent colour and concentration for Pinot Noir.

Aroma: Beautifully expressive with dark cherry, crushed strawberry, plum and red berries, layered with orange zest, subtle vanilla, earth and spice.

Palate: Rich, concentrated and more powerful than many expect from Pinot Noir. Dark cherry and plum flow through a medium-bodied palate with excellent density and firm, beautifully structured tannins. There's plenty of fruit, but also freshness and energy keeping everything beautifully balanced.

Finish: Long, savoury and persistent, with red and dark fruits, subtle spice and fine acidity lingering alongside the structured tannins. Neal Martin particularly highlighted the wine's weight and density, while Jasper Morris praised its generous fruit and excellent energy.

The 2021 was produced at an extraordinarily low yield of just 18 hectolitres per hectare, resulting in a wine of impressive depth and concentration.

Clos de la Boutière – 80-Year-Old Vines

This is where the wine becomes seriously interesting.

Bachelet-Monnot owns half of Clos de la Boutière, a Premier Cru vineyard sitting right on the border of Santenay, at the end of the Clos Roussots vineyard.

The domaine's wine comes from a single parcel of:

80-year-old mass-selection Pinot Noir vines.

The vineyard contains more clay than some neighbouring Maranges sites, contributing additional richness, depth and power to the wine.

And in 2021, yields were tiny:

Just 18 hl/ha.

That combination of old vines + tiny yields + Premier Cru terroir helps explain the concentration in the glass.

Vineyard & Winemaking

with the decision made not to use whole bunches in this vintage.
