Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep crimson-purple with an almost opaque core, showing the concentration and intensity expected from ancient Barossa Shiraz.

Aroma: Powerful yet remarkably complex, with blackberry, dark plum and black cherry layered with peppercorn, dried flowers, exotic spice, cured meat, undergrowth and subtle earthy notes. There's an intriguing mineral and stony character beneath the fruit.

Palate: Deeply flavoured but far from heavy. Blackberry and dark fruits sit at the core, surrounded by pepper, savoury spice, herbs, earth and meaty complexity. The tannins are a major feature — powerful, detailed and beautifully integrated, giving the wine tremendous shape and persistence.

Finish: Exceptionally long and savoury, with dark fruit giving way to peppercorn, crushed stone, woodland notes and fine, persistent tannin.

An Extraordinary Vineyard Story

This is where K' Sands becomes seriously special.

The wine comes from the Asbroek family's vineyard on Kalimna Road West, including Shiraz vines originally planted in:

1864.

There's also fruit from a neighbouring parcel of vines planted around the 1970s. The Asbroek family has farmed the old vineyard for three generations.

Think about that for a moment.

Some of the vines contributing to this wine are more than:

160 years old.

These are genuine survivors from the formative years of the Barossa wine industry.

Australia possesses some of the oldest continuously producing grapevines on earth, and wines like K' Sands demonstrate why those vineyards are international treasures.

Why Is It Called K' Sands?

There's an interesting story behind the name.

Earlier vintages were known as Kalimna Sands, but Callum Powell was asked by a much larger wine business to remove the local place name from subsequent labels.

His response was simple.

The vineyard didn't change.

The wine didn't change.

The name became:

K' Sands.

And the fruit continues to come from the treasured old Asbroek Shiraz vines behind the family's home.

Vineyard & Winemaking

This is ancient-vine Barossa Shiraz made through the lens of Callum Powell and the New Barossa.

Powell's philosophy is deliberately restrained. He avoids excessive ripeness and new oak, favouring long, gentle, cool fermentation, indigenous yeast and gravity movements to preserve the natural aromas and flavours generated by these remarkable vineyards.

Earlier K' Sands releases have employed whole-cluster fermentation, extended skin contact and maturation in puncheons and barriques — techniques designed to preserve perfume and freshness rather than bury the fruit beneath oak.

The result is a completely different interpretation of old-vine Barossa Shiraz.
