The Churchill-Pol Roger Story
Winston Churchill first encountered Pol Roger Champagne at a luncheon in Paris in 1908 — and it became a lifelong devotion. Churchill drank Pol Roger at celebrations, state dinners and quiet moments of reflection throughout his extraordinary life, reportedly consuming an average of a bottle a day. When Churchill died in January 1965, Pol Roger draped their export labels in black mourning bands as a mark of respect — one of the most moving tributes in wine history. In 1984, the house created the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill in his honour — produced only in exceptional years, from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, in the powerful, structured style that Churchill himself would have appreciated.
